Review: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Rating: 3.5/5

WARNING: REVIEW CONTAINS MILD SPOILERS

Review: Right, let's start with what I liked about the book. It was unpredictable, kind of, you can kind of see what's going on from the start but at first you don't really expect the reveal you get which is something that I've already stated in reviews that I like. Second I love the way the author acknowledges how people watch crime shows and think they have the case figured out from what they see on tv and make a decision based on that. Honestly though, I think my favorite part was Amy and how her character was written. It's not often you see female characters portrayed this way and I found it really refreshing, even though her actions were disturbing, well thought out and planned, but incredibly disturbing. One part of the book I actually enjoyed while reading was Nick's sister Margo. She has the same "tragic" story as her twin brother but handles is a bit differently. Her life choices aren't much better but she does manage to keep a clear head and doesn't indulge Nick and tell him he's still perfect or a good person even when he does really shitty things which is something I enjoyed a lot about Margo. It shows a sister who still loves her brother even though she's not sure she trusts him or believes him when he says he's innocent. I think Margo might be my favorite part of the book if I'm honest, even if she isn't featured all that much.

On to what I didn't like. I honestly didn't like how many times I had to read the words "the fucking bitch" and it's not that I don't like profanity, if you've ever talked to me you'll know it's not the case. Nick really isn't a likable character, so even though we find out that the things in Amy's "diary" aren't reliable, it's not difficult to imagine that he would actually do those things which is why everything in the book worked so well. Honestly I really don't know why I can't give this book 5 stars like so many other reviewers have because I really did like it and it was incredibly well done, but there's something just something about it that makes it not sit well with me that I can't figure out.
